National University of the South. Public university of the province of Buenos Aires ; Argentina. The academic structure is organized by departments with high-level university education and research.
History
The Technological Institute of the South was created on October 9, 1946, through provincial law No. 5051, beginning its activities under the academic dependency of the National University of La Plata. In 1947 the Nation and the province of Buenos Aires signed an agreement by which both would contribute the funds for its operation and maintenance. On February 12, 1948, the then President Juan D. Perón appointed Dr. Miguel López Francés as Rector, who should adopt the necessary measures for its organization.
The official inauguration of the ITS took place on February 20, 1948. The university category was granted to it in 1950, but it was abolished in 1952, returning it to depend on the Ministry of Economy of the Nation. The first graduate of the Institute was the engineer Nereo Roberto Parro, in 1953, who was a native of Tornquist.
In 1955, after the fall of the Perón government, Professor Pedro González Prieto was appointed as its comptroller, and negotiations were initiated with the national government to acquire the status of a national university. After the studies carried out by an advisory commission appointed by the Executive Power, the creation of the National University of the South was resolved through decree-law No. 154, of January 5, 1956.
National University of the South
In 1955, after the fall of the Perón government, Professor Pedro González Prieto was appointed as its comptroller, and negotiations were initiated with the national government to acquire the status of a national university. After the studies carried out by an advisory commission appointed by the Executive Power, the creation of the National University of the South was resolved through decree-law No. 154, of January 5, 1956.
That same year, Professor Vicente Fatone was appointed Rector. Classes in the brand new institution began to be taught on April 1 of that year. The UNS was the seventh national university created in the country, being preceded by those of Córdoba (1613), Buenos Aires (1821), La Plata (1890), Tucumán (1912), Litoral (1919) and Cuyo (1939).
The new house organized its academic structure by Departments, instead of the traditional Faculties. These have a smaller administrative structure and allow flexibility and transversality in knowledge. Thus, the academic units should not create for their careers the subjects that others dictate for theirs, which allows students to take them in them. The first Departments were Accounting, Economics, Physics, Geology and Geography, Mathematics, Engineering, Humanities and Chemistry.
University dependencies
The building located at 80 Colon Avenue originally corresponded to the headquarters of the National University of the South. Currently, the activity of the Rector’s Office and its Secretariats is concentrated here, together with other administrative dependencies. At 925 Alem Avenue is the Casa de la Cultura, a colonial-style mansion that was once the hull of an important stately home. This dependency is dedicated to artistic and cultural activities organized by the General Secretariat of Communication and Culture. The Foundation of this institution (FUNS) and the Publishing House (EdiUNS) also work there. The Higher School of Commerce, the EGB School (Initial Level, 1, 2 and 3) and the Higher Normal School operate in the buildings located at 445 April 11th Street.

Projects and researchers
One of the main strengths of the UNS is its development around the Research and Development (R&D) function. This is reflected in the R&D projects that it develops, which cover all possible sources of financing -National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion (ANPCyT), CONICET, Commission for Scientific Research of the Province of Buenos Aires (CIC), Own Resources, etc., in scientific-technological production and in the available infrastructure. The UNS constantly supports the research activities that have been organized for approximately 15 years through the Research Group Projects (PGI).
It is also necessary to point out the high number of research groups with consolidated R&D activities, and although not all the areas in which the Departmental system is divided offer the same degree of development, there is a constant effort to achieve greater impact of the function in each of them. The fact that almost half of the UNS teaching staff is involved in research tasks clearly marks the importance that the Institution gives to this activity, which results in an outstanding scientific production.
Programs and lines of action to promote research and development:
- Research Group Projects (PGI). Subsidies are awarded to finance projects in which the development of relevant scientific or technological research is proposed.
- Research Group Projects on Topics of Regional Interest (PGI-TIR). Funds are assigned to projects aimed at generating scientific or technological knowledge with a high direct impact on the regional social and/or productive sector.
- Support Program for Social Sciences (PROSOC). Program that attends to the development of the social sciences. It seeks the synergy between Law, Geography, Humanities, Economy and Administration.
- Acquisition of Large Equipment. Program aimed at obtaining common use equipment for various research groups, Departments or areas of the University.
Among the mentioned programs we must highlight the PGITIR, since they are in line with the UNS to prioritize certain thematic areas of regional interest and the PROSOC, of Support to the Social Sciences.
University Central Library
Its objective is: to guarantee the availability of the information and documentation necessary for the development of the study, teaching, research and other activities carried out at the Universidad Nacional del Sur. Accordingly, the BC. offers its users very diverse collections. Acquisitions respond to the specific needs of members of the university community, who can participate in the purchase process by requesting documents. The tool that provides access to information about the Library ‘s collections is the catalog (Online Public Access Catalog – OPAC).
