Naropa University was founded in 1974 by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a Buddhist meditation master, scholar, and teacher. It began as an experiment in higher education that was inspired by the Buddhist concept of non-sectarianism. The university is based on the premise that education should be experiential and contemplative as well as intellectual and academic. Its curriculum includes traditional disciplines like business and psychology, but also incorporates contemplative practices such as meditation, yoga, and mindfulness into its educational model.

Since its founding, Naropa University has grown to include more than 800 students from around the world. It offers over 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in fields such as psychology, counseling, organizational systems, creative writing, business administration, religious studies, ecology & sustainability studies, social work and education. In addition to its main campus located in Boulder Colorado it also has a satellite campus located in Denver Colorado that focuses on social justice initiatives. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges & Schools (NCA).
