Mount St. Mary’s University was founded in 1808 by French émigré Father John DuBois. Originally located in Emmitsburg, Maryland, the college was established as a Catholic seminary to provide priests for the United States and abroad. In 1826, the school began admitting lay students, and it quickly became one of the most prominent Catholic universities in the country. In 1863, during the Civil War, Union soldiers burned down much of Emmitsburg and destroyed much of what remained of Mount St. Mary’s campus. After reconstruction, the university moved to its current location on a hilltop overlooking Emmitsburg and Frederick County, Maryland.
