Mount St. Mary’s College was founded in 1925 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, a Catholic religious order that was established in France in 1650. The college was originally located in Los Angeles, California and offered a two-year program for women. The college grew quickly, and by 1928 it had added four-year degree programs as well as a postgraduate program. During this time, the college also moved to its current location in Chalon Campus located on the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

As Mount St. Mary’s College continued to expand, so did its academic offerings. In 1939, the college began offering its first bachelor’s degree programs and expanded again shortly after World War II with the introduction of master’s degree programs in 1949. Since then, Mount St. Mary’s College has grown to become one of the most respected liberal arts colleges in California with over 40 undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered today.
