Morris College was established in 1908, founded by the Baptists of Sumter County. The college was originally named Sumter Baptist Institute and was located in the town of Pinewood, South Carolina. It initially served as a training ground for young African-American men and women to become teachers. In 1910, the school changed its name to Morris College in honor of Reverend William Howard Morris, who had served as a pastor at several churches in Sumter County.

In 1919, Morris College moved from Pinewood to its current location in Sumter, South Carolina. Since then, the college has grown both physically and academically. In 1928, a new gymnasium was built on campus and many new academic programs were added over the years including Nursing Science and Business Administration. During World War II, Morris College provided courses for military servicemen and women through their Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP).

The 1950s saw many changes at Morris College; not only did it become accredited with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) but it also expanded its student population by adding students from other states across the country.
