Morgan State University was founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute by the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Initially, the school was founded to train students for ministry and education within the African American community. Over time, Morgan State University has evolved into a public research university that offers more than 80 degree programs in areas such as architecture, business, engineering, and nursing.
The university has had a long and distinguished history of providing educational opportunities to African American students. In 1939, Morgan State was one of four historically black colleges to receive land-grant status through the Second Morrill Act. This designation allowed Morgan State to expand its academic offerings and resources for students.
