Morehead State University was founded in 1887 as a private, normal school. It was the first institution of higher learning in Rowan County and one of the first Normal Schools in the state. The school’s mission was to provide education and training to future teachers. In 1922, the school became a state-supported teacher’s college, changing its name to Morehead State Teachers College. In 1926, the college expanded its academic offerings to include liberal arts courses and renamed itself Morehead State Normal School and Teachers College. Over the next four decades, Morehead State Normal School and Teachers College grew rapidly, adding new academic programs in education, business, mathematics, science and social sciences. In 1966, it was granted university status and officially became Morehead State University. Since then, MSU has continued to expand its academic offerings with new degree programs in areas such as nursing and engineering technology. MSU now offers over 100 undergraduate majors as well as graduate programs in more than 40 areas of study. The university also has an active research program with projects ranging from astrophysics to Appalachian studies.
