Montana Tech of the University of Montana has a long and rich history. Founded in 1900, it was originally called the Montana State School of Mines and was located in Butte. The school was initially set up to provide a practical education for students interested in the mining industry and related technical fields, such as metallurgy and geology. It was one of the first universities to offer an engineering degree west of the Mississippi River. In 1965, it became part of the University of Montana system, changing its name to Montana Tech.
Since then, Montana Tech has continued to expand its academic offerings and now offers bachelor’s degrees in over 40 fields, including environmental engineering, computer science, business administration, nursing and health professions.
