Missouri State University was founded in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School. It was established to provide a quality education for the teachers of southwest Missouri. The school opened its doors in 1906 with three buildings and an enrollment of 105 students. Over the years, the school has grown and evolved to become a comprehensive university offering a wide range of degree programs. In 1945, the name was changed to Southwest Missouri State College, and in 1972 it became Southwest Missouri State University. In 2005, it was renamed Missouri State University after being granted university status by the state government.
