Misericordia University was founded in 1924 as the College of Saint Basil by the Sisters of Mercy. The college was established to provide Catholic education to women. It began with only 38 students, but by 1966 enrollment had grown to 600 and the college became a university. The college operated out of three buildings until 1958 when it moved to its current location in Dallas, Pennsylvania.
The university grew and expanded over the years, adding new programs and facilities. In 1973, Misericordia established its first graduate program, an MBA program. Over the next few decades, Misericordia added more graduate programs including a Master’s in Education and Social Work, Doctorate in Physical Therapy, and Doctorate in Nursing Practice. In 2008, the university opened a new library that featured state-of-the-art technology for students and faculty members alike.
In 2012, Misericordia launched an online degree program that allowed students from all over the world to take classes from their own homes or offices. This innovative approach has enabled Misericordia to reach a wider audience for its educational offerings than ever before. Today, Misericordia offers more than 60 undergraduate majors as well as several master’s degrees and doctoral programs with an enrollment of nearly 3100 students from all over the world.
