Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) was established as a four-year public university in 1887, when the Moorhead Normal School was founded by the Minnesota Legislature. Initially, the school was established to provide teacher training for rural areas in the northwest corner of Minnesota. It was originally located on the third floor of a local high school, but soon moved to its own building on Main Street in Moorhead. The school’s name changed several times over the years, from Moorhead Normal School to Moorhead State Teachers College and finally to Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1975.
In its early years, students were required to take courses in Latin and German along with their other classes. Over time, however, the curriculum diversified and expanded to include a wide range of subjects such as science, business administration and engineering. During World War II, MSUM served as a training center for U.S. military personnel who were preparing for deployment overseas. After the war ended, enrollment at MSUM began to increase significantly due to returning veterans taking advantage of their GI Bill benefits and taking classes at MSUM on the government’s dime. Today, MSUM is home to more than 5500 students from all over the world who are pursuing degrees in numerous disciplines including business administration, education, nursing and more. The university also offers an extensive array of online courses that allow students from all walks of life an opportunity to further their education without having to leave their current job or relocate to attend classes on campus. Check USPRIVATESCHOOLSFINDER for a list of private schools in Nevada.
