Minnesota State University at Mankato has a long and rich history that dates back to the late 1800s. The school was founded in 1868 as Mankato Normal School, making it the second oldest public higher education institution in Minnesota. The school was initially established to train teachers and administrators for the state’s public school system. In 1921, the name of the school was changed to Mankato State Teachers College and it began offering baccalaureate degrees in 1924. In the 1950s, the college expanded its curriculum and began offering graduate programs as well as summer sessions for students. In 1975, the college was renamed Mankato State University and continued to expand its academic offerings. In 1998, it became Minnesota State University at Mankato after merging with other state universities in Minnesota.
