The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design was founded in 1974 as the first independent college of art and design in Wisconsin. It began with a faculty of five, offering classes in a variety of disciplines including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and ceramics. The school quickly developed a reputation for its high quality instruction and progressive curriculum. In the early 2000s, MIAD began to expand its offerings beyond the traditional fine arts to include animation, graphic design and interactive media. The school now offers more than 30 majors in various visual arts disciplines.
