Mills College was founded in 1852 by Cyrus and Susan Mills, two former Congregational missionaries from the East Coast. The college was initially located in Benicia, California and was named the Young Ladies Seminary at Benicia. The college moved to Oakland in 1871 and focused on a liberal arts education for young women. The school also had a strong emphasis on providing educational opportunities for women of color, which continues to this day. In 1915, the school changed its name to Mills College and became an independent liberal arts college for women. In 1990, Mills College began admitting men as students, making it one of the first all-women’s colleges in the U.S. to do so. Today, Mills remains committed to its mission of educating young women and men who will become leaders in their fields and communities. The campus is home to over 1000 undergraduate students and more than 500 graduate students studying a range of disciplines including business, education, engineering, music, science and art. Additionally, Mills offers several unique academic programs such as a five-year Bachelor’s/Master’s degree program and an interdisciplinary Honors Program that allows students to explore their interests through coursework from multiple disciplines. Outside of academics, student organizations abound at Mills with over 60 clubs ranging from cultural organizations to service groups to special interest clubs like the Robotics Club or the Quidditch Club!
