Founded in 1855, it is the oldest normal school in Pennsylvania, and one of the first to offer a four-year baccalaureate degree program. Initially known as the Lancaster County Normal School, it was renamed Millersville State Normal School after its benefactor Henry A. Millersville. In 1926, it became Millersville State Teachers College, offering more advanced degrees in education. In 1960, its name was changed again to Millersville State College, and in 1983 it was granted university status and became Millersville University of Pennsylvania.

Millersville University of Pennsylvania is a four-year public university located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1855 and is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The university offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees, certificates, and minors. In 2019, the school had an enrollment of 8,061 undergraduate students and 612 graduate students. The majority of the student body is Caucasian (75%), followed by Hispanic/Latino (7%), African American (5%), Asian/Pacific Islander (4%) and other races or ethnicities (9%).
