Founded in 1855, it is the oldest normal school in Pennsylvania, and one of the first to offer a four-year baccalaureate degree program. Initially known as the Lancaster County Normal School, it was renamed Millersville State Normal School after its benefactor Henry A. Millersville. In 1926, it became Millersville State Teachers College, offering more advanced degrees in education. In 1960, its name was changed again to Millersville State College, and in 1983 it was granted university status and became Millersville University of Pennsylvania.
