Midway College was founded in 1847 in Midway, Kentucky. It was initially a female seminary and the first college established in the state to offer post-secondary education to women. The college was founded by Dr. Lewis L. Pinkerton and Reverend John C. Young as an institution for educating young women of the region. During its early years, the college offered educational courses such as literature, music, art, science and mathematics. In 1866, the college became coeducational and began offering collegiate-level courses such as Latin, Greek and higher mathematics for both male and female students.
