Midstate College was established in 1872 by a small group of civic-minded citizens who wanted to create a higher education institution in their community. Initially, the college was only open to men, and its curriculum focused mainly on mathematics, literature and the sciences. In the late 19th century, Midstate College began to expand its offerings, introducing courses such as education and business. At the turn of the 20th century, Midstate College opened its doors to women and began offering degrees in engineering as well as other professional fields. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Midstate College continued to grow and expand its academic offerings with new departments such as psychology and political science being established. The college also began building up its physical campus with several buildings being constructed for classrooms and residence halls. In recent years, Midstate College has continued to evolve with new degree programs being added in fields such as computer science and environmental studies.
