Metropolitan State University was founded in 1971 as a result of the Minnesota Legislature’s passage of the Metropolitan State College Act. It was the first public university in Minnesota to be created specifically to provide higher educational opportunities for urban adults. The college was originally located at the Midway Shopping Center in St. Paul, but it quickly outgrew its space and relocated to its current location on Marshall Avenue in St. Paul’s Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood. In 1982, the institution changed its name from Metropolitan State College to Metropolitan State University, reflecting its growth and expansion over the years.
The university is now home to a wide variety of academic programs, including undergraduate majors and minors, graduate programs, and certificate programs. In addition to traditional courses taught on campus, Metropolitan State University also offers online classes and distance learning options for those who cannot attend classes on campus due to work or other obligations. The university has also developed partnerships with other institutions such as Century College and Normandale Community College that allow students to take classes at both institutions while still paying Metro State’s tuition rates. As an urban research university with a commitment to diversity and inclusion, Metropolitan State University continues to strive towards meeting the needs of its diverse student body by providing quality education and resources they need for success.
