Methodist University was founded in 1956 by the North Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church as a four-year college. The university was located on a 75-acre campus in Fayetteville, NC, and was originally named Methodist College. In 1961, the college achieved full accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). From the start, Methodist College focused on providing quality education in a caring Christian environment. The college had an enrollment of 819 students when it opened its doors, and by 1975 that number had grown to 2,000 students.

In 1976, the college changed its name to Methodist University to reflect its growth in size and scope. The university continued to expand over the next several decades with new buildings and programs added throughout that time. In 1984, Methodist University established their first graduate program offering master’s degrees in Business Administration (MBA) and Education (MEd).
