Merrimack College was founded in 1947 by the Order of St. Augustine (OSA), a Catholic religious order. It was originally named the Augustinian College of the Merrimack Valley and located in the town of North Andover, Massachusetts. The college’s first president was Brother Gilbert Hartke, OSA. The college initially enrolled just over 200 students, most of whom were World War II veterans returning home from service. Over the years, Merrimack has grown significantly in size and scope, now enrolling over 4,000 students every year and offering more than 100 different academic programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
