Meredith College was founded in 1891 by Thomas Meredith and his wife, Lula Martin Meredith. The college was originally established as a women’s college and was the first of its kind in North Carolina. It was founded with the intention of providing higher education to young women, who at the time were not offered many educational opportunities. The school opened with just sixteen students, but quickly grew to become one of the largest women’s colleges in the South by 1925. Throughout its history, Meredith College has been dedicated to providing quality education for women and has kept its focus on liberal arts and sciences curriculum. In addition to its traditional academic offerings, it also provides courses in business, nursing, education, engineering and computer science. Over the years, Meredith College has also become known for its strong extracurricular activities such as athletics, student organizations, volunteerism and international study programs. Today it is ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the nation and continues to be an important part of higher education for young women across North Carolina.
