Mercer University was founded in 1833 as the Mercer Institute in Penfield, Georgia. It was founded by Baptists from Newton County, Georgia who wanted to provide higher education and training in the region. The school underwent several name changes before becoming Mercer University in 1837. In 1871, Mercer relocated to Macon, Georgia and began offering more course options including law and medicine. In 1873, the first woman was admitted to Mercer University. Over the next century, Mercer continued to expand its offerings and campus size. In 1982, it opened a branch campus in Atlanta and began offering distance learning programs in 1994. Today, Mercer offers over 100 undergraduate majors and dozens of graduate programs across its six campuses located throughout Georgia and one in China.
