McKendree University was founded in 1828 by Methodist pioneers and is the oldest university in the state of Illinois. It was originally named Lebanon Seminary, and began as a preparatory school for local youths. In 1830, it became a college-level institution and changed its name to McKendree College in honor of Bishop William McKendree, the first American Methodist bishop. The college was initially located in Lebanon, Illinois but moved to its current location in Lebanon, Illinois in 1867.
