McDaniel College has a rich history that dates back to 1867. Founded by the citizens of Westminster, Maryland, the college was originally known as Western Maryland College and was established as a preparatory school for students wishing to attend Johns Hopkins University. In 1902, the college was renamed after its principal benefactor, William Roberts McDaniel, who donated $100,000 to the school. The college officially became a four-year institution in 1952 and began offering bachelor’s degrees in the liberal arts and sciences. In 1953, McDaniel College began offering master’s degrees in several disciplines such as education and business administration.
Throughout the years, McDaniel College has seen considerable growth and expansion due to generous donations from alumni and other supporters of the school. In 1964, the college opened its doors to female students for the first time in its history and changed its name to McDaniel College in 2002. The college now offers more than 50 undergraduate majors as well as several graduate programs including an MBA program that is accredited by AACSB International. Additionally, McDaniel College is home to several research centers such as The Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship which provides resources and guidance for budding entrepreneurs across Maryland.
