Passport information

Generally required, must still be valid for 6 months upon entry.

Visa information

Required for nationals of the countries listed in the table above, among others. Among other things, German, Austrian and Swiss citizens can apply for a visa upon arrival at Nuakchott Airport or at the border point 55 km from Nouadhibou. The visa fee of €55 (approx. US$60) to €95 must be paid in cash.

Germans, Austrians, Swiss and Turks: Tourist and business visa on arrival: €55 (approx. US$60) to €95 (stay up to 30 days) in cash.

30 days, 1 month, 3 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years and longer.

Transit

Otherwise, transit travelers who require a visa and who fly on with the next connection within 24 hours, have valid documents for the onward journey and do not leave the transit area do not require a transit visa. In person or by post at the consulate or the consular department of the embassy (see contact addresses). Only in person at the responsible consulate of Mauritania. Attention: Visas are currently issued upon arrival at Nuakchott Airport or at the border.

Application required

(a) 1 application form (to be completed in French) (downloadable from the website of the relevant diplomatic mission). (b) 2 recent passport photos. (c) Passport valid for six months upon entry and copy of passport. (d) Individual travel: precise itinerary and travel dates (places to be visited, border crossings, airports, etc.). (e) Proof of hotel booking or a letter from the host. (f) Travel agent’s certificate of paid return or onward travel tickets or bank statement of sufficient funds for travel. (g) Fee (by personal check or bank transfer) – receipt must be presented upon entry!. Business visa additionally: (h) Letter of secondment from your own company with information on the purpose and duration of the trip, occupation of the traveler and confirmation of the assumption of costs; (i) Company invitation in Mauritania. A stamped, registered return envelope and proof of payment of the visa fee should be enclosed with the postal application.

Processing time

3 to 4 weeks. In Berlin: 14 working days.

Extension of stay

Proof of paid visa fees must be presented to the border guard.

Entry with children

German: Machine-readable children’s passport or your own passport. Austrians: Own passport. Swiss: Own passport. Turks: Own passport. Note: The same visa requirements apply to children as to their parents. If children under the age of 18 travel alone, they need a written declaration of consent from their parents. Since June 27, 2012, children need their own travel document (passport / children’s passport) to travel abroad (also within the EU). Entries of children in the parental passport are no longer possible.

Entry with pets

For entry with dogs and cats, a vaccination card with a valid rabies vaccination and a valid health certificate must be presented for each animal.
