Massachusetts College of Art and Design (also known as MassArt) was founded in 1873 as the first public art school in the United States. It began as an evening drawing school to provide instruction in the fine arts for working adults, and soon after expanded to a full-time institution offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. During its early years, MassArt was actively involved in the Arts and Crafts Movement, with many of its faculty members being esteemed practitioners of the movement. In 1924, it became part of the Massachusetts State College system and moved to its current location on Huntington Avenue in Boston. During this time it also changed its name from Massachusetts Normal Art School to Massachusetts College of Art.
MassArt achieved university status in 2008, becoming one of only three public universities devoted exclusively to visual and performing arts education in the United States. The college offers over twenty-five degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, Media & Performing Arts and Art Education. The college also has a number of cultural centers which serve various artistic communities on campus such as African American Studies Center, Asian Cultural Center and Latinx Cultural Center among others. In addition to academics MassArt is well known for its diverse student body which includes students from all over the world as well as those from local communities around Boston.
