Maryville College was founded in 1819 by the Presbyterian Church. It was the first college in the state of Tennessee and is one of the oldest colleges west of the Appalachian Mountains. The school opened its doors in October 1819 with a small group of students, most of whom were from local families. The original mission of Maryville College was to educate young men and women in “all branches of literature, science, and art” with an emphasis on Christian values. In its first year, only five students graduated from Maryville College and it wasn’t until 1851 that the college awarded its first degree.
Throughout its history, Maryville College has been committed to providing a quality education to all students regardless of their background or financial means.
