Marymount University has a long and rich history that began in 1950 when the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) founded the school in Arlington, Virginia. Originally, the university was established as Marymount College of Virginia, a two-year liberal arts college for women which was authorized to grant associate degrees. In 1973, Marymount College became Marymount University and granted its first baccalaureate degrees in 1975. The university began to expand its academic program offerings and by 1996, it had added graduate programs and achieved university status.
