Marymount Manhattan College was founded in 1936 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary. It was originally located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and was known as Marymount Junior College. The college initially offered two-year associate degrees in liberal arts and secretarial studies. In 1948, it became a four-year liberal arts college and changed its name to Marymount College. In 1961, the college moved to its current location at 221 East 71st Street and began offering graduate courses for the first time.
In 1968, Marymount College established a formal relationship with Fordham University, which allowed students to transfer credits towards a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University. This collaboration enabled Marymount College to expand its academic offerings to include bachelor’s degrees in business administration, human services, psychology and sociology. In 1973, Marymount College was granted university status and changed its name to Marymount Manhattan College (MMC). The university continued to grow over the years by adding new programs such as music therapy, art therapy and occupational therapy. MMC also introduced study abroad opportunities for students interested in exploring different cultures around the world. In 2004, MMC opened its state-of-the-art theater complex with four performance spaces for student productions as well as professional performances from acclaimed theater companies from around the world. Today MMC is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers more than 40 undergraduate programs and six graduate programs across three schools: Arts & Sciences; Professional Studies; and Social Sciences & Education.
