Founded in 1842 by Rufus William Bailey, it was originally an all-female school called the Augusta Female Seminary. The school was renamed Mary Baldwin College in 1895 after its first principal, Mary Julia Baldwin. Throughout its history, the college has continued to expand and adapt to meet the changing needs of students. In 1922, Mary Baldwin became a four-year college and began offering bachelor’s degrees. In 1977, the college opened a residential campus for adult women and began offering degree completion programs for women returning to college after taking time off for work or family commitments.
