Marian University was founded in 1936 by the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes as Marian College. At the time, the college was an all-women’s school that offered two year programs in liberal arts and nursing. In 1945, Marian College was granted accreditation and began offering four-year bachelor’s degree programs in Arts, Sciences, Nursing and the newly created Teacher Education program.

In 1968, Marian College became a co-educational institution and began offering graduate degree programs in Education, Business Administration and Human Services. In 2005, Marian College officially became a university when it was granted permission to offer its first doctoral program in Physical Therapy.
