Maine Maritime Academy was founded in 1941 as the Maine Nautical School. It was established by the state of Maine to provide maritime education and training for students interested in a career in the marine industry. The school’s first classes were held on a former Navy base in Castine, Maine with three faculty members and twenty-three students. Over the years, the school has grown tremendously and now offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Marine Engineering, Marine Transportation, International Business & Logistics, Small Vessel Operations & Technology, and many other disciplines. The academy is also home to several research centers that focus on topics such as ocean engineering and renewable energy. In addition to its academic programs, Maine Maritime Academy also offers numerous extracurricular activities including sailing clubs, student organizations, internships and study abroad opportunities.
