MacMurray College was founded in 1846 by Presbyterian minister Dr. John Hanna and named after James MacMurray, a prominent Illinois lawyer and politician. The college was initially established as an all-women’s school, with the purpose of providing educational opportunities to young women in the area. The college grew rapidly over the next several decades, adding a host of new programs and expanding its campus to accommodate larger student numbers. In 1961, MacMurray College became coeducational and began offering graduate programs in various disciplines. Over the years, the college has experienced a variety of changes as it strives to keep up with the needs of its students. Today, MacMurray College is a fully accredited four-year liberal arts institution that offers certificate programs, associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees in more than 25 areas of study.
