Lyndon State College was founded in 1911 as the Lyndon Normal School. It was the first state-funded teacher training school in Vermont, and it was designed to provide training for teachers in the state’s rural areas. In 1951, the school’s name changed to Lyndon Teachers College, and it began offering a four-year degree program. The college continued to operate as a teacher training school until 1965 when it became Lyndon State College and began offering broader academic programs. In 1973, the college became part of the Vermont State Colleges system. Over the years, Lyndon State College has grown from its original mission of providing teacher education to becoming a comprehensive liberal arts college that offers over 40 majors and minors in addition to its teacher education program.
