Luther College was founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants and is located in Decorah, Iowa. It began as a preparatory school for Norwegian immigrants and their children, but soon began to offer college-level classes. In 1895, the school was officially incorporated as Luther College and became the first four-year Lutheran college west of the Mississippi River. Since its founding, Luther has grown to become one of the top liberal arts colleges in the Midwest, offering over 60 majors and pre-professional programs. It is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and holds strong ties to its Norwegian heritage.
