Lourdes College was founded in 1958 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio. The college was established to fulfill the need for a Catholic college in the Toledo area and provide an education rooted in Franciscan values. The Sisters of St. Francis had been providing education, health care and other services to the people of Toledo since 1872, and their commitment to quality education is still evident today.
The first classes were held in 1959 at a local parish school with an enrollment of only 71 students. Over time, Lourdes College grew rapidly and moved to its current location in 1967. In 1973, it was granted accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), making it one of the few private colleges accredited by this commission at that time. Since then, Lourdes has been continuously accredited by HLC and has grown significantly — both in size and academic program offerings — serving over 2,000 students today from all backgrounds and faiths.
