Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania (LHUP) has a long and proud history. Established in 1870 as the Central State Normal School, it was the first normal school in Pennsylvania. The school was founded to train teachers for the state’s public schools. In 1926, the school changed its name to Lock Haven State Teachers College and began offering four-year degrees in addition to two-year teacher training programs. In 1960, it was renamed Lock Haven State College and began offering a wider range of degree programs, including graduate degrees in education. In 1983, Lock Haven State College became Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and continued to expand its academic offerings with new graduate programs and an emphasis on research. Today, LHUP is a comprehensive university that offers over 50 undergraduate majors and more than 20 graduate degree programs.
