Linfield College was founded in 1849 by the Oregon Baptist Education Society and named after Reverend George Fisher Linfield. It is the oldest college in Oregon and the second oldest college west of the Rocky Mountains. The school opened with 11 students and two faculty members, offering a classical curriculum and instruction in Latin, Greek, Spanish, French, mathematics, natural science, theology, and literature. In 1889 the school changed its name to Linfield College and began offering a more diverse curriculum. Over the years Linfield College has grown from a small liberal arts college to a comprehensive university offering more than 50 undergraduate majors as well as graduate degrees in business administration, education, nursing practice and physical therapy. The college also operates four centers: The McMinnville Center for Lifelong Learning; The Center for International Studies; The Center for Community Engagement; and The Janet L. Osbourne Women’s Leadership Center. Additionally Linfield is home to an independent student-run newspaper called “The Linfield Review” which has been published since 1921.
