Lincoln University was founded in 1854 as the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University. Located in Chester County, Pennsylvania, it was established to serve the needs of African Americans who were denied access to other institutions of higher education at the time. The university was originally known as Ashmun Institute and was established by Reverend John Miller Dickey and his wife Sarah Emlen Cresson. It was named after their friend, President Abraham Lincoln, who had recently issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The school quickly grew in size and scope, and over time its curriculum expanded to include courses in business, education, engineering and law.

In 1923, Ashmun Institute became Lincoln University due to a generous donation from Mr. Henry S. McCook of Philadelphia. In 1937, Lincoln earned accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSACS). Throughout its history Lincoln has been dedicated to serving students from diverse backgrounds with an emphasis on access for African Americans and other underrepresented groups. Today it is home to more than 2200 undergraduate students from across the country who are pursuing degrees in over 50 majors including business administration, criminal justice, sociology and engineering technology. It also offers a number of graduate programs such as Master’s degrees in Education Leadership & Administration or Business Administration & Management as well as Doctoral programs in Higher Education & Student Affairs Leadership or Educational Leadership & Policy Studies.
