Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) was founded in 1897 by two veterans of the American Civil War, Oliver P. Temple and General Alexander Arthur. The university was established as an act of gratitude to their fallen comrades. LMU was originally located in Harrogate, Tennessee and served as a private college for over 60 years before becoming a public institution in 1969.
