Lincoln College was founded in 1961 when Dr. William E. Thornton, a local pastor and civil rights activist, gathered together a group of African American citizens to create an educational institution that would meet the needs of the community. The college was established to provide quality education and training for African American students who could not gain access to higher education at other institutions due to racial segregation. Initially, the college only offered classes in the evenings for local adults who were looking to further their education. Over time, it grew into a full-time two-year college offering associate degrees in fields such as business administration, accounting, and engineering technology.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Lincoln College began offering four-year bachelor’s degree programs in several areas of study such as social work and education. The college also added new facilities such as an expanded library and student center that provided students with additional resources for learning. In addition, Lincoln College began working with local high schools to offer dual enrollment opportunities so that high school students could begin taking courses at Lincoln while still enrolled in high school.
