Liberty University was founded in 1971 by Dr. Jerry Falwell Sr. as Lynchburg Baptist College. It was established with the mission of training men and women in the fields of Christian ministry, business, and education. The college grew over the next decade and changed its name to Liberty Baptist College in 1976. In 1984, Liberty Baptist College received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This enabled the school to offer its first graduate degree program, a Master of Arts in Religion.
