Liberty University was founded in 1971 by Dr. Jerry Falwell Sr. as Lynchburg Baptist College. It was established with the mission of training men and women in the fields of Christian ministry, business, and education. The college grew over the next decade and changed its name to Liberty Baptist College in 1976. In 1984, Liberty Baptist College received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This enabled the school to offer its first graduate degree program, a Master of Arts in Religion. The school continued to expand its academic offerings and student body over the years, eventually becoming Liberty University in 1985. By 1994, Liberty University had become a full-fledged university with more than 3,000 students enrolled in degree programs ranging from associate’s degrees to doctoral degrees. Today Liberty University is one of the largest private universities in America with over 100,000 students enrolled on-campus and online from all 50 states and more than 80 countries around the world.
