Lewis University was founded in 1932 by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate. The school, originally named St. Francis Normal School, was founded to provide professional education and training for lay teachers in the area.

In 1935, the school was renamed Lewis College of Science and Technology after a generous donation from Frank J. Lewis, a successful businessman and philanthropist from Joliet, IL who wanted to give back to his community. Over the years, Lewis College expanded its curriculum to include liberal arts and sciences as well as business courses.

In 1973, Lewis College became a university and changed its name to Lewis University. Lewis University is an accredited, private Roman Catholic university located in Romeoville, Illinois. The university has a total enrollment of over 6,000 students and offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degrees.
