Lesley University began as the Lesley School in 1909, founded by Edith Lesley Wolfard. The school was initially established to provide teacher training and education for women, although it eventually expanded its mission to provide a wide range of educational opportunities.
The school quickly grew in size and stature, and by 1949 had become an accredited college. In 1954, the college officially became Lesley College, and in 1998 it was granted university status. Today, Lesley University offers a wide range of degrees in fields such as art and design, arts and sciences, counseling and psychology, education, management and leadership, music therapy and more.
Lesley University is also home to a number of research centers that focus on issues such as early childhood education, urban education reform, special needs education, learning technology, literacy studies and more. The university also works closely with local schools to provide educational opportunities for students who may not otherwise have access to higher education. Additionally, the university has created numerous initiatives aimed at providing support for students from all backgrounds including those from low-income families or those with disabilities. This commitment to diversity has earned Lesley University recognition from organizations such as the American Council on Education’s Center for Diversity & Inclusion Excellence Award.
