Lawrence Technological University (LTU) was founded in 1932 as Lawrence Institute of Technology (LIT) by Russell E. Lawrence. LIT was established with a mission to provide job-oriented education to the students of Detroit and its surrounding areas. The institute was initially located on the second floor of the Detroit YMCA building and offered courses in engineering, architecture, and science. In 1941, the institute moved to its current location in Southfield, Michigan and changed its name to Lawrence Institute of Technology.
In 1955, the institute was granted university status by the Michigan State Board of Education and thus came to be known as Lawrence Technological University. Over time, LTU has continuously expanded its academic offerings and now offers degrees in various fields such as architecture, engineering, management sciences, health sciences, arts & sciences, humanities & social sciences etc. In addition to traditional on-campus programs, LTU also offers online degree programs through its College of Professional Studies.
