Lander University was founded in 1872 as Williamston Female College by Rev. Samuel Lander and his wife, Sarah. It was the first college in South Carolina to be established exclusively for women and offered a classical education that included English, Latin, Greek, French and German. The school moved to Greenwood in 1904 and changed its name to Lander College in honor of its founder. In the years that followed, the institution has grown in size and scope, offering an array of undergraduate and graduate degrees. In 1990, it was granted university status by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, thus becoming Lander University. Today it is a four-year public institution with a student body of approximately 3,500 students enrolled in more than 80 programs of study across five schools: Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; Education; Health Sciences; and Nursing & Allied Health Studies.
