Lake Forest College was founded in 1857 as the first college in Lake County, Illinois. The college was initially established by Presbyterian minister Rev. Robert W. Patterson with the intention of providing a liberal arts education to residents of the area. Over the years, the college has grown from its humble beginnings to a respected institution of higher learning.
In 1876, Lake Forest College became co-educational and in 1905 it became one of the first four-year institutions in Illinois to award degrees to women. In addition to its academic offerings, Lake Forest College is known for its various extracurricular activities and athletics programs. In 1925, it was one of the founding members of what is now known as the Midwest Conference (MWC). The MWC is a Division III athletic conference made up of seven schools located in Illinois and Wisconsin.
The college has also been a leader in sustainability efforts over the last decade or so, becoming one of only two colleges nationwide to be named an “Eco-Campus” by the National Wildlife Federation for its commitment to environmental stewardship and conservation initiatives.
