LaGrange College was founded in 1831 as a private liberal arts college in LaGrange, Georgia. It is the oldest and one of the most historic higher education institutions in the state. The college was originally established by members of the Methodist Church, who sought to provide educational opportunities for students in the area. The campus was initially located on a five-acre plot of land donated by local citizens and named after General LaFayette’s estate in France.
The college quickly grew in popularity and size, with its original enrollment of just ten students increasing to more than 200 by 1836. During this period, LaGrange College saw many successes such as the establishment of its first library in 1833 and its first student newspaper, The Lagrange Collegian, two years later. Throughout its history, LaGrange College has maintained an emphasis on providing quality education while also promoting Christian values and community service. In addition to offering a variety of degree programs today, it has a strong focus on providing students with internships and study abroad opportunities that will prepare them for their future careers.
