La Salle University was founded in 1863 by the Christian Brothers, a Roman Catholic religious teaching order. It was initially named La Salle College in honor of St. John Baptist de La Salle, the patron saint of teachers and founder of the order. The college was originally located on Willings Alley in Philadelphia and focused on providing a quality education to young men. In its early years, La Salle College offered courses in Latin, Greek, English, French, mathematics and science. As the college grew and prospered, it moved to a larger campus on Broad Street in 1872.
In 1927, La Salle College officially became a university and received its university charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This marked an important milestone for the school as it solidified its reputation as a premier institution of higher learning in Philadelphia. The university continued to expand over the years with more courses being added to its curriculum and more students attending classes at its various campuses throughout the city. In addition to its main campus on Broad Street, La Salle University now operates multiple satellite campuses throughout Philadelphia and New Jersey as well as an online program for students who cannot attend classes at any of their physical locations. Today, La Salle University offers over 80 undergraduate majors across five schools including Arts & Sciences, Business Administration & Economics, Nursing & Health Sciences, Professional Studies & Education and Law & Criminal Justice Studies.
