Kutztown University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1866 as the Keystone Normal School, a teaching college for the preparation of teachers. The school was renamed Kutztown State Teachers College in 1928 and Kutztown State College in 1960. In 1983, the school became Kutztown University of Pennsylvania after it was granted university status by the Commonwealth.

Kutztown University has seen many changes over its history, including a move to a new campus in 1906 and several expansions of its physical plant.
